The IMX533 is a 1-inch, 9-megapixel, square-format CMOS image sensor with a pixel size of 3.76 µm that can produce images at 20 fps in 14-bit mode.
The readout noise is only 1.0e, which makes it comparable to SCMOS or EMCCD sensors and is ideal for high-resolution, low-noise images.
IMX533 Backlit Sensor
Sony’s backlit CMOS image sensor improves sensitivity and noise reduction – key factors in improving image quality, while radically realigning the basic pixel structure from front lighting to back lighting. The advantages of CMOS image sensors such as low power consumption and high-speed operation have been retained.
In a conventional front-lighting structure, the metal wiring and transistors on the surface of the silicon substrate that form the light-sensitive area (photodiode) of the sensor prevent the on-chip lens from collecting photons. A backlit structure minimizes the degradation in sensitivity to the angular optical response while increasing the amount of light entering each pixel because there are no obstacles such as metal wirings and transistors that have moved to the back of the silicon substrate.
Sony has developed a unique photodiode structure and on-chip lens that are optimized for backlit structures. They achieve higher sensitivity and lower random noise with no light by reducing noise, dark current and defective pixels compared to traditional front-lit pixels.

Zero Amp Glow
Conventional CMOS sensors generate a weak infrared light source during operation, which can often be seen in the corner of uncalibrated images as a tell-tale sign of “Amp Glow”. Because the AP533MC-PRO uses a zero amp glow circuit, you don’t have to worry about the traffic light glowing even when using a long time high gain exposure.
With Amp Glow – exposure 300 seconds exposure, AP533-PRO frame without amp glow – exposure 300 seconds.
Note: We recommend using an external 12 V power supply to power the camera instead of just USB 3.0 / 2.0
DDR memory buffer
The AP533MC-PRO is equipped with a USB 3.0 interface and can achieve 20 images per second even in 14-bit mode. The 256 MB DDR3 memory ensures stable downloading of frames with increased USB speed.
Updated version of AP183
The AP533MC-PRO features SONY’s latest IMX533 backlit sensor and a 9.07 megapixel square sensor ideal for astronomical photography.
As you would expect, this latest generation camera not only retains the main features of the AP183 series, such as an attractive QE number, high frame rate and other excellent features of the AP183 cameras, but now also includes new and improved functions such as the zero amplifier Glow, ultra-low readout noise (as low as 1.0e), a pixel size of 3.76 microns, and an upgraded 2-stage TEC cooler for improved cooling capabilities.
